Hydrosols and Floral Waters
Hydrosols —also known as floral waters or aromatic waters— are the liquid soul of plants. They are obtained as part of the steam-distillation process used to produce essential oils, and contain water-soluble aromatic molecules that preserve the therapeutic properties of the plants, but in a gentler and safer form. They are ideal for the face, body, hair, and for emotional use in subtle aromatherapy.
Hydrosols: the softest expression of botanical power
Hydrosols —also known as floral or aromatic waters— are the liquid essence of plants. They are obtained during the steam distillation of essential oils and retain their therapeutic properties in a milder, water-based form that is perfectly tolerated even by sensitive or reactive skin. In natural cosmetics, they are used as facial toners, the water phase in DIY formulations, refreshing mists, and in energetic treatments within subtle aromatherapy.
Each hydrosol has a unique personality. Damask rose hydrosol hydrates, tones, and regenerates mature or dry skin with a comforting, enveloping aroma. Lavender hydrosol soothes, purifies, and helps the skin recover from sun exposure or minor irritations. Orange blossom (neroli) hydrosol brightens and balances dull or uneven skin, while also providing emotional uplift. If you need to calm delicate skin—whether adult, child, or baby—chamomile hydrosol is a liquid caress that soothes and comforts. Rosemary hydrosol is a favorite for regulating excess oil on both skin and scalp, while witch hazel tightens, decongests, and is ideal for enlarged pores, rosacea, or couperose.
What are hydrosols used for?
Hydrosols have a wide range of uses in both personal care and aromatherapy. They are applied as natural facial toners, used directly on the skin to balance pH, tighten pores, refresh, and prepare the skin for other treatments. They are also ideal for soothing the skin after sun exposure, shaving, or waxing, thanks to their anti-inflammatory and regenerating properties. In hair care, hydrosols such as rosemary stimulate the scalp and strengthen the hair from the root.
They are also excellent for formulating DIY natural cosmetics, serving as the aqueous phase of creams, lotions, and masks, adding therapeutic benefits without the need for artificial additives. Emotionally, they can be used as energetic or room mists, purifying spaces or harmonizing mood—especially hydrosols like orange blossom, lavender, or sage. They are also useful to refresh the skin throughout the day, especially in hot weather or whenever an instant moment of well-being is needed.
Thanks to their safety and gentle nature, they can even be applied to babies or extremely sensitive skin, including skin affected by dermatitis or irritation.
