Macerated oils and bases for your preparations
There are no essential oils or pressed vegetable oils here: there are macerates and additives, the piece that tends to be missing when someone starts formulating at home and the result is not what they expected.
What a macerate is and why it is not a vegetable oil
A vegetable oil is obtained by pressing the seed or the fruit. A macerate is different: the plant is left to rest inside a base oil for weeks so that the oil takes on its active compounds.
- Calendula: the most versatile, for reactive skin and irritated areas.
- Arnica: the classic for massage after physical effort.
- Juniper cade: the most intense in aroma, traditional in hair and scalp care.
They are used just like a carrier oil, on their own or as a base to dilute essential oil.
Glycerine and vitamin E, the two that change a formula
The other two products in this category do not add aroma, they add texture and stability.
Vegetable glycerine is a humectant: it holds water in the skin and softens soaps and gels. Tocopherol, which is natural vitamin E, is an antioxidant and slows the rancidity of your oils, so a home preparation keeps considerably longer.
Both are worked in at low percentages. More is not better: an excess of glycerine leaves a sticky feel and an excess of tocopherol adds nothing.
